Bank Holiday Success!

It has been a busy few days in the diary of Witham Dolphins Swimming Club over the Bank Holiday Weekend. Saturday 26th May saw the Colchester Swimming Open, Sunday 27th the Wisbeach Open and Tuesday 29th the presentation by South Woodham Ferrers Rotary Club to the two overall winning teams, both from Witham Dolphins. 

The South Woodham Ferrers Rotary Club hold this annual event to raise money for locally based charities. This year the monies raised was presented to the Helen Rawlinson charity.  The Masters team won the "Swimarathon" Kingsview Group trophy for the swimming the most number of lengths in 55 minutes (a staggering 197! proving that even the "mature" swimmers have and maintain the ability encouraged and developed by the Head Coach, Paul Robbins) with some of the A Squad Members (named "Junior Dolphins" for the event) winning the Electro UK Ltd Junior Inter-Club Team Event with a massive 184 lengths. Colin Flight, Club Secretary, said "it's a wonderful opportunity for our swimmers to take part in a fun and worth-while activity and to be able to give something back to local community, our thanks must go to Roy Bullen, Peter Skerratt and all the other people of South Woodham Rotary who made this possible. We look forward to retaining the trophies next year!" 

The main event, the Colchester Open, attracted attendance from across the county and beyond.  Our very own Dolphins attended, fielding a total of 16 swimmers across the various disciplines and age groups. They were Emily McIntosh, Emily Bulleid, Hannah Flight, Stephanie Agar, Lauren Baker, Sarah Purnell, Lauren Flight, James Dickson, Tom Smith-Evans, Joe Hellier, Matthew Stoker, Catherine Lumley, Gemma Wass, Matthew Holland, Jennifer Stott, & Sarah Digby.

In addition to some debut swims by three of the swimmers, the most notable medal placings within the age groups were;

  -  2nd 50m Butterfly
  -  3rd 50m Breaststroke
  -  4th 50m Freestyle
  -  5th Individual Medley
Jennifer Stott
  -  1st 50m Breaststroke
Lauren Baker
  -  2nd 50m Breaststroke
  -  6th Individual Medley
  -  6th 50m Freestyle

Catherine Lumley
  -  2nd Individual Medley

Joe Hellier
  -  3rd 50m Freestyle
  -  5th 50m Breaststroke
Gemma Wass
  -  5th 50m Backstroke
  -  5th 50m Freestyle
Sarah Purnell
  -  6th 50m Butterfly
  -  6th 50m Backstroke

In addition to the medals, some excellent Personal Best times were achieved Stephanie Agar (4), Emily Bulleid (4), Emily McIntosh (3), Hannah Flight, Matthew Stoker, Tom Smith-Evans, Matthew Holland & James Dickson.

Coach on the day, Wayne Bulleid, said "it was a fantastic day for all concerned with many memorable moments which a lot of the competitors will treasure. Our thanks to the event organisers for what was a great day."

The Wisbeach Open on Sunday 28th saw Catherine Lumley gain a fantastic 4th place in the 100m Backstroke event.
