Sensational Stratton Secures Southern Silver

Friday 14th April 2006

On Good Friday 14 April 2006 a small team of five swimmers from Witham Dolphins Swimming Club headed off to sunny Southend to take part in their annual Easter Open Meet at Warriors Swimming Centre.

First of the blocks during the morning session was young Laura Briggs taking part in event 1 the girls 100 Metre Breaststroke.  Laura got off to a great start and finished her heat 5th in a time of 2.14.63 finishing 20th overall in her age category.  Next to swim in the same event was Katie Stratton who flew down the pool with great ease knocking a further second of her own personal best time to swim in 1.29.77 and take a superb Silver Medal Placing in the under 14's age group.

Next it was a turn for one of the male swimmers Jonathan Briggs swimming in the 100 metre Butterfly.  Again Jonathan got off to a flying start and led the race for around 70 metres with swimmers from 5 other clubs in hot pursuit Jonathan could not hold out and finished his race third with a stunning 3 seconds being taken from his personal best time in 1.23.02 and finishing overall in 17th place in the under 15's category.

Event three followed with Laura Briggs again taking the blocks for what was her final race of the day the 100 Metre Freestyle.  Again she got away quickly from the blocks and swam the race of her life in what was an exiting race to take a massive 5 seconds of her personal best time to swim in 1.36.51 and be placed 19th overall in her age category.   Swimming in the same event, Catherine Lumley was the next to swim and again swan the race of her life achieving yet another new personal best time of 1.05.35.  This was enough for her also to placed with an un-expected Bronze Medal finishing 3rd overall in her age group.

After a long break between the morning warm up session and his event young Nathan Bentley was last to swim in the morning session 100m metre Backstroke.  With a great start away from the wall Nathan swam hard against his fellow competitors to finish in a new personal best time of 1.37.23 being placed 13th overall in the under 13's age category.

The morning finished with medal presentations for both Katie & Catherine and this was a great start for the day and set the president for the afternoon's events.

Back from lunch and feeling refreshed Katie Stratton was once again back on the blocks for her next race the 100 Metre Backstroke.  Hoping to pull something out of the bag again Katie was again quickly away and swimming hard.  Finishing 3rd in her heat in a time of 1.23.74 just outside of her own personal best  she did well to finish 11th overall in her age category.

Next to swim again in the same category 100 metre Backstroke was Catherine Lumley.  Once again she got off to an explosive start and led the race all the way.  Finishing in a time of 1.15.40, Catherine finished 4th Overall in the under 16's category and received another well deserved medal.

Next on the blocks was Nathan Bentley for his second swim of the day competing in the under 13's 100 Metre Breaststroke.  Again another great start from the blocks and Nathan was in the lead for the first two legs of the 33 metre pool.  Knowing that the other swimmers were hard on his tail Nathan stepped up a gear but regrettably could not maintain his lead in the race and finished 4th with a time of 1.48.73 just outside his own personal best but never the less an excellent swim.

Next to swim was young Katie Stratton again this time taking on the 100 Metre Butterfly.  Could she do something with this race and get herself back on the rostrum?  Yes was the answer.  A superb race with some strong competition but once again Katie proved she would not be beaten easily and fought hard to once again earn herself another Silver Medal placing in her last race of the day finishing in a time of 1.20.76.

The last event of the day was the Boys 100 Metre freestyle with both Jonathan & Nathan taking to the blocks.  First up was Nathan swimming in the under 13's category with once again an excellent race achieving a new personal best time of 1.16.80 and finishing 7th overall, just missing out on a medal.   Jonathan rounded up the days racing for the Dolphins Team again with another great swim this being just outside his own personal best time in 1.09.36 and finished 19th overall.

Overall the five swimmers that attended managed to achieve a medal position in all four strokes, and a total of 6 personal best times from just 8 events.

Catherine Lumley, Nathan Bentley & Katie Stratton
